Pupils and parents across Nantwich were warned today after it emerged swine flu has hit the town.
Headteacher of Brine Leas School Andrew Cliffe has issued a letter to all parents, although there are no confirmed cases among his pupils yet.
Mr Cliffe said the Health Protection Agency and Central and Eastern Cheshire Primary Care have both confirmed there is emerging evidence that swine flu is now present and spreading in Nantwich.
“Measures are being taken to reduce the spread within the school and we want to reassure parents that there is no cause for concern.”
A Central and Eastern Cheshire Primary Care Trust spokesman has confirmed that the disease is now present in the area.
Dave Rowson, associate director of communications at the trust, told NantwichNews: “We can’t go into individual cases but latest records show seven confirmed cases.
“The Health Protection Agency will look at individual cases and will decide if it’s necessary to close a school or not.
“Swine flu is now widely prevalent and there are going to be more cases.”
Mr Rowson emphasised the importance of swine flu sufferers following latest Government advice leaflet. He said sufferers should stay indoors, phone their GP, and to arrange for a “flu friend” to pick up any prescribed anti-viral drugs from GP clinics.
“Following this advice is vital if we are to stop the spread,” he added.
