Fire crews are damping down after finally bringing a huge blaze at a scrap metal dealers in Nantwich under control. These pictures show the scale of the incident at Garratt’s Metals, which forced police to close all major roads around the site on Alvaston Business Park.

A 13km stretch of the A530 between Nantwich and the A525 near Whitchurch has been named one of the most dangerous routes in Britain. The road, which passes through several villages including Aston, Sound, and Newhall, is among those highlighted as “persistently high risk” in a report by the Road Safety Foundation.

A mound of sleepers and tyres were set on fire on open land off Middlewich Road, Nantwich. The blaze caused large plumes of smoke close to the busy A530 and took two firefighter crews wearing breathing apparatus to bring the blaze under control.
